There=E2=80=99s a lot to be said about Kevin Saunderson: platinum-selling=
recording artist=2C label boss=2C festival promoter=2C true innovator in=
the pantheon of popular music=2C cultural champion=2C cracking DJ. His in=
fluence runs deep=2C through both adopted hometown of Detroit=2C and music=
culture as a whole: as one of the Belleville Three=2C the high school tri=
o which also includes Juan Atkins and Derrick May=2C he irrevocably change=
d the face of electronic music; with Inner City=2C he gave it some of its=
most memorable tunes.
The genesis of today=E2=80=99s techno scene can be retraced straight to Ke=
vin=2C Derrick and Juan=2C as their formative experiments on rudimentary h=
ardware sketched a blueprint for a genre that was yet to exist. By absorbi=
ng Kraftwerk=2C cutting-edge funk=2C local radio stalwart The Electrifying=
Mojo=E2=80=99s eclecticism=2C and all manner of new synthesiser and drum=
machine-led pop music=2C the Belleville Three broke new ground as musicia=
ns and DJs in the 80s.
Saunderson=E2=80=99s comparatively late start as a producer =E2=80=93 kick=
ing off in =E2=80=9987 under the moniker of Kreem=2C with E-Dancer and Ree=
se two of the more well-known names to follow =E2=80=93 inadvertently gift=
ed him a headstart. With the eruption of house music a few hours down the=
I-94 in Chicago=2C Saunderson married Detroit=E2=80=99s raw sound to more=
tactile=2C pop-leaning sensibilities. Inner City was born=2C and global s=
uccess followed.
Between =E2=80=9CBig Fun=E2=80=9D=2C =E2=80=9CGood Life=E2=80=9D=2C debut=
album Paradise and a number of follow-up singles=2C Inner City (Saunderso=
n and vocalist Paris Grey) amassed 12 UK top 40 hits and over six million=
records sold worldwide during their peak. His nickname of =E2=80=98The El=
evator=E2=80=99 is apt: for his role in transporting Detroit=E2=80=99s new=
sound to a wider audience; as anyone who has seen him perform live can at=
test=2C his high-energy=2C high-spirit and high-impact DJ sets; and for sp=
ending the past 35 years of his life progressing the culture he helped cre=
ate.
In the intervening years Kevin has been the prime mover in some of the mos=
t ambitious and remarkable dance music projects of the last few decades: c=
hronicling the early footsteps of artists like R-Tyme=2C Blake Baxter=2C M=
K=2C Chez Damier=2C Derrick Carter and Bicep on his own KMS imprint. A spe=
cial 12=E2=80=9D series in 2008 called History Elevate=2C released in tand=
em with fellow polymath Carl Craig=E2=80=99s Planet E label=2C brought con=
temporary names like Mathew Jonson=2C Simian Mobile Disco and Loco Dice in=
to the fold=2C proving his nous for fostering relationships with each new=
wave to come through techno=E2=80=99s gates.
